Project Lead the Way (PLTW) and Gateway To Technology (GTT)

6th, 7th and 8th Grade

Project Lead The Way is a program that helps build a strong foundation for PLTW Classes at Coronado High School.

PLTW (Project Lead The Way) CS Innovators Students trace the history, development, & influence of automation & robotics.  They learn about mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation & computer control system.  Students use a robust robotics platform to design, build & program real word solutions to solve an existing problem.  Students will learn that programming goes beyond the virtual world into the physical world.  Students are challenged to creatively use sensors & actuators to develop systems that interact with their environment.  Designing algorithms & using computational thinking practices, they code and upload programs to microcontrollers that perform a variety of authentic tasks.

PLTW Automation Robotics (Computer Tech) Students trace the history, development, & influence of automation & robotics.  They learn about mechanical systems, energy transfer, machine automation & computer control system.  Students use a robust robotics platform to design, build & program real word solutions to solve an existing problem students will learn that programming goes beyond the virtual world into the physical world.  Students are challenged to creatively use sensors & actuators to develop systems that interact with their environment.  Designing algorithms & using computational thinking practices, they code and upload programs to microcontrollers that perform a variety of authentic tasks.

PLTW (Project Lead The Way) Green Architecture  (Wood Shop)  This course will be a Hybrid PLTW class and Woodshop. The first part of the semester students will have a STEM unit of study. The focus of this unit is the practice of architecture and sustainable development. Students explore residential building systems, residential construction and construction costs, site planning, and architectural documentation. They design a tiny house or small home using recycled shipping containers and use fundamental features of 3D architectural software to document their design. The second part of the semester students will learn skills from Careers in Construction Colorado/Home Builders Institute Curriculum, and apply those skills in building and design in the Holmes Woodshop.

GTT Intro to Comp Science Students will be introduced to the fundamentals of programming logic using a variety of languages. Introductory concepts in Python, JavaScript, JQuery, PHP, HTML, CSS, and Ruby will be explored. Everyday examples and clear explanations are used so students with no prior programming experience can have success.

PLTW (Project Lead The Way) Design and Modeling (DM) – (Wood Shop) This course will be a Hybrid PLTW class and Woodshop. The first part of the semester students will have a STEM unit of study. DM provides students opportunities to apply the design process to creatively solve problems. Students are introduced to the unit problem in the first activity and are asked to make connections to the problem throughout the lessons. Students learn to use methods for communicating design ideas through sketches, solid models, and mathematical models. Students will understand how models can be simulated to represent an authentic situation and generate data for further analysis and observations. Students work in teams to identify design requirements, research the topic, and engage stakeholders. Teams design a toy or game for a child with cerebral palsy, fabricate and test it, and make necessary modifications to optimize the design solution. The second part of the semester students will apply lessons learned from DM to fabricate and design projects in the Holmes Woodshop.

Introduction to Technology This course is a brief introduction to technology, engineering, measurement, drawing styles, descriptive geometry and solid modeling. Students will use a 3D modeling software program to create various designs.  Additionally, students will learn to use MS Office applications and use multiple keyboarding skills programs.
